In December 2010, GreenAngel Energy’s investee company Rapid Electric Vehicles (REV) began a contract with Honeywell Aerospace, and the US Military (Specifically the Tank/Automotive Research Centre – TARDEC) to supply four of their patented bi-directional APV’s. The APV fleet (Ancilliary Power Vehicles) will be made up of 3 converted Ford Escapes and 1 Converted Ford F-150. The first of four electric vehicles has already been delivered.
This is exciting news for GreenAngel Energy Co. as it represents continued success from our investee companies. GreenAngel Energy allows public investment access (TSX.V:GAE) to 6 early stage green energy technology companies like REV. Learn more about green energy investment.
REV has developed technology that efficiently converts these vehicles into fully-electric APV’s, completely eliminating the need for fossil fuels. The converted vehicles are propelled by a 125kW motor and gearbox drive systems that deliver the same amount of torque that a regular gasoline engine would produce. The most exciting part is that these aren’t just your everyday fleet vehicles, their power is bi-directional, meaning they double as a huge portable energy source.
Rapid Electric Vehicles uses a proprietary control strategy that is designed to remotely notify they APV’s energy storage systems to store intermittent sources of energy like solar and wind power. This mechanism also allows the electric vehicles to supply an uninterrupted source of energy to high consumption equipment, computer servers, and construction sites. The project with US Military will rely on the vehicles to provide mobile back-up power to run radar sites and computer networks in the event of power loss. The smart grid technology that REV works with is also revolutionary, as it allows seamless switching between power going in or coming out of the vehicle. Smart Grids are particularly important when working with alternative energy sources, as it’s important to store power when it’s coming in, and take power when it’s not available.
Besides the contract with the US Military, REV has customer orders and MOU’s for more than 25 APV’s to the municipalities in Santa Monica, Surrey, Welland, and to Burlington Hydro.
This concept of providing uninterrupted backup power sources that double as fleet vehicles comes at a time where combined costs for power outages reach into the hundreds of billions in North America alone.
